Allen Community College women’s basketball coach Todd Buchanan couldn’t bring himself to look at one point during the second half of the Red Devils’ 79-48 loss to Seward County Community College on Wednesday in Iola.

Buchanan was beside himself because after the Red Devils rallied with a 21-8 second quarter to tie the game at 32-32 at halftime, Allen couldn’t get out of their own way and were out-scored 47-16 in the second half.

“It is really disappointing,” Buchanan said. “It is like a broken record, we don’t come out of the locker room to compete for the final 20 minutes… We are just very, very inconsistent.”

The Red Devils charged back into the game after a lackluster first quarter with Buchanan inserting freshman guard Kamri Summons.

“I thought Kam came in and did a good job pressuring the ball,” Buchanan said. “Her defense really set the tone for us on our run.”

Summons completely changed the pace of the game for Allen. The point guard provided pressure defense and frustrated Seward into multiple turnovers.

Summons scored 12 points, second on the team behind DaMonica Franklin’s 13 points.

In the second half things  fell apart for the Red Devils. They allowed Seward to shoot 57 percent from the field and Allen shot only 29 percent.

“We stopped attacking and just gave in,” Buchanan said. “That is the sad part, mentally we just gave in.”

HOUSTON INJURED

Allen guard Kendra Houston dove for a loose ball in the second half and landed awkwardly on her knee. The freshman remained laying flat on the court until Buchanan and trainers got to her and helped her up. Trainers carried Houston to the sideline and she didn’t put any weight on her leg.

Buchanan described the injury as a “severe bruise,” after the game.
