Allen Community College freshman guard Sequerah Alleyne had one of the best games of her college career on Wednesday night in Iola against Cowley County Community College.
Despite a 68-40 loss, Alleyne was great in her return to the Red Devil starting lineup. She had a team-high 12 points and three steals.
“I thought her and (Tamera Shaver) were our MVPs tonight,” Allen coach Todd Buchanan said. “They hustled and gave great effort.”
Shaver had 10 points.
But the game took a toll on Alleyne. Following the game, she became very ill and was taken to Allen County Regional Hospital.
Buchanan accompanied Alleyene to the hospital and said she was treated for low blood sugar. All other tests came back negative.
She was released late Wednesday night and will have a follow up appointment next week.
The scare with Alleyne just added to night’s frustration.
After only trailing 28-26 at halftime, Allen imploded in the second half and Cowley County out-scored the Red Devils 40-14 in the final 20 minutes.
Allen was still hanging close at 36-32 after an Alleyne basket midway through the third quarter, but Kori Seals committed a technical foul and that sparked a run for the Tigers.
By the time the run ended, Cowley County had scored 21 straight points and built a commanding 57-32 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.
“In the first half, I thought we played hard, were aggressive and stuck to the game plan,” Buchanan said. “We kept fighting and kept our heads up. I thought it was absolutely, completely the opposite for most of the second half.”
The Tigers coasted to a 68-40 victory.
The season-long turnover problems for Allen continued on Wednesday with 31 turnovers.
“I’ve said it over and over again that we aren’t going to beat anyone, we aren’t going to beat Mickey Mouse with 31 turnovers,” Buchanan said.
Buchanan was very disappointed in the play of leading-scorer Damonica Franklin. The sophomore only had four points, one rebound and committed three fouls.
“I thought she was absolutely a no-show,” Buchanan said.
In addition to Alleyne’s 12 points and Shaver’s 10, Kamri Summons had seven points and seven rebounds from her point guard position.
