Offense and defense were on full display for the Allen Community College softball team in a doubleheader sweep against Cottey College Wednesday.

The 7-2 and 15-0 wins  in Allen’s regular season finale extended the Red Devil winning streak to five.

“I thought the second game they really came together really well as a team, put up 15 runs,” head coach Jamie Amerine said. “The first game they looked really sluggish. The second game really proved what type of team we are.”

Pitcher Marissa Luna threw a complete game to earn the win in the opener, allowing three hits and four walks. She gave up two runs, one earned, and had nine strikeouts.

Cottey took a 1-0 lead in the third on a wild pitch.

Allen took the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning off a two-run single by Kayla Bourgeois, who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

Allen extended its lead with a three-run fourth. Shayla Stephens singled, scoring Stormie Bush. Annie Gentry hit a sacrifice fly, and Erika King then scored on a bad throw from a Cottey outfielder.

The Comets scored in the fifth on a ground ball out to pull within 5-2. The Red Devils answered in the bottom of the frame with Bourgeois stealing home to make it 6-2.

Allen’s final run in the sixth came on an RBI double by Bourgeois.

Jordan Barber and Luna both had singles. Bailey Burnett was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Shelby Maycumber left the game after colliding with Bush earlier in the game, hurting her ankle. Amerine said she will be looked at today once the swelling goes down, to learn her status for Saturday’s Region VI playoff doubleheader at Johnson County.

ALLEN HAD a combined no-hitter, needing only five innings due to the run limit to complete the sweep.

Luna started, pitching three innings with two strikeouts. Cassidy Reynolds finished it off, pitching for the first time this season. She went two innings with one strikeout and allowed one walk.

Already up 3-0, an eight-run third inning propelled the Red Devils to a commanding lead. L’Orien Pacheco reached first on a fielder’s choice, which scored a run. Bourgeois had an RBI single. Bush stole home. Allen then took advantage of four Comet errors, scoring each time.

Allen scored four more in the fourth to end the game. Reynolds had an RBI double. Bourgeois had an RBI single, then scored on a double from Burnett, who later scored on a passed ball.

Gentry led the way, going 3-for-4 with three runs. Bourgeois and Burnett each had two hits and two RBIs. Barber had two hits. ACC had 13 hits, with every player scoring at least once.
