Allen County Community College’s Red Devil softball team blasted away on a windy Wednesday afternoon. The Red Devils hit five home runs in a doubleheader, taking both games by eight-run margins.
Allen County decked visiting Cottey College Comets of Nevada, Mo. The first game lasted five innings as ACCC won 10-2. The second game went six innings as ACCC claimed an 8-0 win.
Freshman Jenna Sigg leads the Red Devils with eight home runs after hitting two Wednesday. Her eight round-trippers put her tied for eighth on the NJCAA Division II list.
Sigg also climbed to fourth in the nation in stolen bases with 27. Sigg is perfect this season on stolen base attempts.
In the first game against Cottey, sophomore Shawna Blakesley went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one.
Blakesley singled to start the game followed by a one-out base hit by Sigg, who stole second. Callie Umholtz drove in a run with a single then Sigg scored on an error.
The Comets used three hits — they only had four for the game — including a home run to score two runs in the second. Allen County broke the 2-2 tie with a five-run third.
Blakesley doubled and scored on a single by Carr. Sigg cranked out a two-run home run. Brandie Hutcheson singled with two gone then Lenzie Boring connected for a two-run home run.
Allen County added three more runs in the fifth to end the game on a run-rule. The Red Devils had six stolen bases in the game.
Sigg had a single and a home run while Blakesley had two singles and a double. Umholtz had two singles.
Hitting a single each were Carr, Hutcheson and Kylie Taylor. Boring had the home run.
Boring also picked up her 11th win of the season on the mound. She walked one, allowed four hits and struck out four.
Blakesley opened the second game with a leadoff solo home run. Denise Swanson singled, moved around on a passed ball and wild pitch then scored on a single by Sigg, who was 3-for-3 in the game.
Sigg stole second and would score on an error to put ACCC up 3-0. Sigg leads the Red Devils with a .390 hitting average and is second in RBIs with 32.
Allen County put two more runs up in the fourth. Swanson had a single with one out and Sigg hammered out a home run.
In the fifth, Hutcheson doubled and Megan Dillow singled. Hutcheson came home when Chalice Schmollinger grounded out.
