Most people are awed at the sight of a flock of birds taking flight. But the sight of more than a dozen waterfowl in field north of Gas City brought thoughts of shame Thursday afternoon.
Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Natural Resource Officer Ben Womelsdorf said it sickened him what he found following a tip.
“An anonymous tip came in on where the the geese and ducks were dumped,” Womelsdorf said. “All of the waterfowl were killed with a rifle and none of the birds had been cleaned and there wasn’t  any attempt to utilize the meat.”
The group of waterfowl consisted of Canada and speckle belly geese and mallard ducks. The dump site for the birds was between 2000 Street and 2200 Street one mile north of Gas City.
“I’m assuming they were shot off an agriculture field or a smaller lake, gathered and transported to the location where they were dumped,” Womelsdorf said.
A reward of up to $1,000 is offered for information yielding the conviction of the people shooting and/or participating in the poaching of the waterfowl. Any information can help, Womelsdorf said.
Call 620-365-7122 and leave a message along with contract information unless you wish to remain anonymous.
“This was an extremely heinous act in need of strict and swift prosecution,” Womelsdorf said.
