FORT SCOTT — The Iola Seahorses capped their season with four championships at the SEK League Swim Meet in Fort Scott Friday and Saturday.
Noah Schowengerdt led the Seahorse attack with three top finishes. The 8-year-old swimmer finished first in the 25-yard backstroke, 25-yard breaststroke and 25-yard freestyle in his age group.
“He definitely improved a lot (this season),” Seahorse coach Chelsea Lea said. “He is one of our best swimmers as far as having a lot of energy. He is always smiling.”
Schowengerdt also took second in the 25-yard butterfly stroke and third in the 50-yard freestyle when he raced against 9- and 10-year-olds.
“He did really well,” Lea said. “He got first overall in his age division and he got a trophy that he got to take home. He did really well, even though towards the end his times were a little longer because he got a little nervous, but the heat was really getting to everyone.”
Trenton Varney earned the other first-place finish for Iola in the 11- and 12-year-olds’ 50-yard breaststroke. Varney swam the race in 38.56 seconds.
“He was up against some of the fastest times that I have ever seen in that age division,” Lea said. “He is definitely in the top tier of that group which is great, because it just shows that he is doing amazing.”
Lea was happy with the team’s overall performance.
“This was definitely a very good group,” Lea said. “Our younger kids will always look left and right before each race and tell the lanes next to them, ‘Good luck.’”
Oliva Kerr took third-place overall among 11 and 12 year old girls. She was second in the 50-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard backstroke. She also was third in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle.
