The shorthanded Southern Coffey County Titans’ rally came a couple scores shy of a homecoming victory, falling to the Chetopa Hornets 33-20 last Friday.
After snapping a years-long losing streak earlier this month, the Titans came up just short of two wins in a row. They’ll hope to bounce back when they face Altoona-Midway on the road this Friday.
The Titans made do without junior running back Josh Snyder, who missed last Friday’s game due after being ejected last Friday after receiving his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Instead, it was junior Cyrus Nickel carrying much of the load for Southern Coffey County with 49 yards on 16 carries for a touchdown. Freshman quarterback Brantlee Jones accounted for the Titans’ other two scores with a pair of touchdown throws to Trey Winn, who had two catches for 43 yards and two touchdowns.
Chetopa scored all 33 of their points in the first half, but Southern Coffey County’s defense stiffened in the second to hold the Hornets scoreless from there. Defensively, Winn had a team-leading eight tackles, followed by Nickel with seven, eight total, and freshman Brandon Bussell with five solo tackles and six total tackles.
With the loss, Chetopa falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the 6-man North Division. At 1-1, the Titans hope to improve their position next Friday against the Jets (0-2, 0-3).
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
