Whether scoring the game-winning touchdown, finishing a race atop the leaderboard or leading a team to the top of their conference standings, voting for the most deserving Allen County Area Athlete of the week will not be a simple decision.
Voting will take place through October 16th. Readers can vote online here or call the Register office at (620) 365-2111 to cast their ballot.
Keegan Hill, Iola, junior runner
With the regional and state meet soon to come, it may have been more appropriate to nominate Iola junior Keegan Hill for October, but September saw Hill running among the area’s elite. He recently took first place at the Eureka Invitational and sixth at the Central Heights Invitational in September.
Tyler Lord, Marmaton Valley, senior quarterback
After graduating multiple key players last spring, more than a few area coaches thought it would be a down year for the Wildcasts. But Marmaton Valley starting quarterback and linebacker Tyler Lord had other ideas. Lord has guided the Wildcats to an undefeated run through the Three Rivers League so far, racking up a team-leading 18 touchdowns and rushing for more than 100 yards per game along the way.
Reed Clift, Iola ,sophomore running back
With a 1-5 start, it has been a rough season for the Iola Mustangs, but sophomore running back/quarterback Reed Clift has been a bright spot. Filling in for an injured Easton Weseloh, Clift has five touchdowns this season. Four of them came in a Homecoming night romp of Anderson County.
Ricklyn Hillmon, Humboldt, senior outside hitter
With the Humboldt Lady Cubs just a few games away from a Tri-Valley League title, Humboldt’s hardest hitter was a shoo-in for an athlete of the month nomination. Hillmon recently eclipsed 500 career kills and has been the Lady Cubs’ go-to weapon during their run up the TVL standings.
Peyton Schmidt, Crest, senior runner
Like Iola’s Hill, Schmidt’s biggest contribution to her team may not come until later this month. But her performances thus far deserve recognition. Schmidt’s name has consistently been at the top of leaderboards this season. With teammates Josie Walter, Aubrey Allen and Kallei Robb also finding their footing in the past few races, Crest has a strong chance to bring home a state trophy.
Cayten Cummings, Yates Center, junior outside hitter
With the Yates Center High School Lady Wildcats playing for a share of the Three Rivers League title Tuesday, it’s difficult not to recognize the team’s biggest arm as a potential athlete of the month. Cummings is not only the Wildcats’ big gun at the net; she also regularly leads Yates Center in digs, and her height gives opposing teams nightmares.
