Letter to the editor — February 24, 2015
Dear editor,
Our governor, if you want to call him that, is trying very hard to turn our wonderful state into a socialist state similar to the old U.S.S.R., or Russia.
First he attacked our health welfare by refusing to expand Medicaid. Then he attacked our schools. Then he attacked our teachers of those schools.
Then recently he attacked the divorce laws. He had one of his committee members state what a married couple should be — “Leave it to Beaver” families.
He attacked gay rights. Which whether or not you support gays and lesbians, canceling out an anti-discrimination law is inexcusable. He could also cancel out discrimination against religious beliefs, women’s rights, and the rights for blacks, Hispanics, Asians, etc.
Now — the last straw! He is attacking the farmer. Farming is what makes Kansas. But, if you look at Russia and third world countries, the farmer only farms for the upper class and does not receive any income except what grain and produce to feed his or her family.
The income tax situation has come to a head. He is proposing to tax the farmer excessively, so that the farmer receives no income. If the farmer receives no income, he will default on the farm loans. If the farmer defaults on his farm loans, the banks have no choice but to take the farm — selling to the highest bidder — which of course will be the rich corporations who see the chance to control where the wheat, corn, soybeans, cattle, meat, and all that what feeds the U.S. or the world goes. The corporations, which are so favored by Brownback, will control the prices. The prices will go up and up and up. And make it impossible for the poor to buy groceries to feed their families. I must also point out that by now the middle class will now be classified as poor. All right here in the state of Kansas.
This is a very sad situation because the farmer has always been under the impression that a Republican governor is the best governor for them. I am a Republican, and I do not think the same way Brownback does. And, I truly believe that most of you do not think the same way Brownback does either.
I am urging each and every one of you to go to Tony Piazza’s petition and vote for the recall of Sam Brownback.
I have had enough. Surely you have too.
Go to MoveOn.org, and vote for the recall of Brownback, now.
Also, please call your representative and senator in the Kansas Legislature and urge him or her to Vote NO for Brownback’s proposal to raise the tax on farmers. This proposal could definitely ruin our state as we know it.
Our lives will change dramatically. And, we will not be able to enjoy our freedom in a state that once was very free from all of the troubles of the world. We will be experiencing the same troubles and will not be able to afford to even feed our families. Let alone our dental care and medical care.
Sign the recall petition for the sake of us all.
Once again — God Help Us.
Sincerely,
Carolyn S. Mynatt

Five injured in Humboldt wreck
HUMBOLDT — A two-vehicle accident sent five people, including two children, to the hospital Monday afternoon.

Bronson mother, daughter face charges after wreck
A Bronson woman and her daughter face several criminal charges after crashing their vehicle while fleeing officers.
The Iola Police Department reported Tammy Heintzelman, 45, and Chelsea Brantley, 21, both of Bronson, were arrested after they crashed near the intersection of 1800 Street and North Dakota Road, about a mile northeast of Iola.
The report stemmed from an alleged case of shoplifting from Iola Walmart, Police Chief Jared Warner said.
Dispatchers summoned police to Walmart, at which time the two were spotted leaving the store in a vehicle with two toddlers — one 3 years old, the other 9 months — in tow.
“The dispatcher made the officers aware of the children,” Warner said.
After positively identifying the vehicle, an Iola police officer deployed his emergency lights in an attempt to get the vehicle to stop.
It did not.
The officer followed the car, Warner said, until it became apparent the suspects had no intention of stopping.
The suspects traveled along Rhode Island Road before turning south at 1800 Street, northeast of Iola.
By then, the officer could no longer see the suspect vehicle, and he called off the chase.
Another officer on standby at U.S. 54 saw headlights coming from 1800 Street, and headed out when the lights suddenly disappeared.
The officer arrived at the scene to see the vehicle had slid off the road.
Neither Heintzelman nor Brantley were injured, nor were the two children.
The youngsters were taken as a precaution to Allen County Regional Hospital for observation. They later were taken into protective custody.
Heintzelman is being charged with aggravated endangerment of a child, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, theft and criminal trespassing.
Brantley is being charged with child endangerment, theft and criminal trespassing.
Warner said officers take into account varying factors when deciding to call off a pursuit, including road conditions, the severity of the alleged crime, and in this case, having young children involved.
“I thought the officer used good judgment in keeping his distance after they didn’t stop,” Warner said. “He followed with the hopes of resolving the incident, but he did it in as safe a manner as possible.”
