Fire destroys Moran home
MORAN — Dosha Walters has to laugh every now and then.
“Otherwise, I’d just cry,” she said.
Walters, her fiance, Preston Andres, and her 16-year-old son lost their home and all of their belongings in a mobile home fire in Moran Monday afternoon.
She was the only one home, and escaped injury.
The fire started in a rear bedroom beneath Walters’ bed.
“We think it was electrical,” Walters told the Register. “I heard a couple of loud pops, and then the carpet was on fire.”
“I tried to push the bed out of the way to throw some water on it, but it was spreading pretty quickly,” she said. “All I could do was run.”
She exited with the clothes on her back.
Moran volunteer firefighters were on the scene within minutes.
“I’d always heard trailer fires spread quickly. It did. They tried all they could, but the house was gone. We had a couple of animals they were able to save. I thank them for everything they did,” she said.
The home, on the side side of East Second Street, between Sycamore and Elm, was owned by Mike and Lori Holman. Neither Walters nor Andres had rental insurance.
“We’ve always just lived week to week,” Walters said. “We’ve had to start over before in our six years together, but never anything complete like this.”
The first order of business is finding a home. The family is staying in a motel until permanent housing can be found.
“We aren’t asking for donations yet, because we don’t have any place to put it,” Walters said.
Red Cross representatives have been in touch with the family for potential donations.
Walters said they are looking for a home in the Fort Scott area, where Andres works.

Seahorses swim against Fort Scott Wednesday
FORT SCOTT — The Iola Seahorses competed against Fort Scott Wednesday night. Iola scored 238 points out of 774.
“I saw a bunch of our team improve,” coach Ciara Klubek said. “Jordan (Strickler) and I can tell our work this season has paid off and we’re grateful.”
Fort Scott had the advantage before the meet even started.
“Fort Scott had twice as many swimmers, but we still gave them a run for their money,” Klubek said. “We gave it our all and prayed we’d finish well.”
Next week the team will compete in the league meet in Coffeyville July 25-26.
“This was a great way to end our regular season,” Klubek said. “Now we get to look forward to our league championship.”
