Daniels files for county commission

Jerry Daniels, Humboldt, is throwing his hat into the political ring.

Daniels, 45, filed Tuesday for a seat on the Allen County Commission.

He’s the second to file for the seat held by outgoing Dick Works, who announced previously he would not seek re-election.

Daniels joins Moran’s James Mueller as candidates, thus ensuring an Aug. 5 primary vote. (Both are Republicans.) Candidates have until June 2 to file.

Works’ seat covers much of the southern and eastern portions of Allen County, including Humboldt, Moran, Elsmore and Savonburg areas.

“Dick has done a great job,” Daniels said. “I want to do my part.”

Daniels has had a lengthy career in law enforcement. In addition to serving as Allen County undersheriff for about a year under current Sheriff Bryan Murphy, Daniels worked for about 20 years combined with the Humboldt Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol.

A licensed pilot, Daniels also flew medical helicopters for several years, and now owns Humboldt Helicopters.

He also farms and ranches near Humboldt and is retired from the Kansas National Guard.

“I’ve worked at the city and state level, and working at the county level has given me an insight and experience I think would be valuable as a commissioner,” he said. “I’ve worked at the corporate level, and I’m a business owner.”

The general election is in November. The next commissioner will be seated in January 2015.

Daniels and his wife, Dena, have four children.

Man impaled in boating mishap

Jerry Scheibmeir, 59, Humboldt, was in critical condition at the University of Kansas Medical Center Tuesday afternoon following surgery to remove a four-inch-diameter limb from his midsection.

Sheriff Bryan Murphy said Scheibmeir and three friends were fishing in the Neosho River when their boat ran afoul of brush and a protruding limb struck and penetrated Scheibmeir’s body.

A number of emergency responders converged on the scene, about five miles southwest of Iola, and moved Scheibmeir up the bank to an Eagle Med helicopter. He was flown directly to KU Med, where surgery was performed Monday evening.

Family friends told the Register infection was a concern as Scheibmeir recovers.

Murphy said many responders had a role in getting Scheibmeir on his way to the medical center.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is investigating the accident.

Sellman earns 3A berth

CANEY — Humboldt High’s Robbie Sellman made it three-for-three in state appearanced on the golf course Monday.

Sellman’s 91 placed him 10th overall at Monday’s Class 3A Regional Tournament.

To make it to state, a golfer must be either a member of the top two teams at regionals, or be among the five lowest scores of all other golfers.

Other scores from the regional were unavailable by press time.

Sellman advances to the Class 3A State Tournament next Tuesday at Cheney.

Schemper fine

LACROSSE — Nick Schemper put together his best round of golf Monday since the 2014 season began.

It couldn’t have come at a better time.

Schemper’s third-place 83 at Monday’s Sand Green Regional Tournament qualified him for state for the fourth year in a row.

“Nick finally put together decent back-to-back nine holes,” Wildcat golf coach Kevin Barnes said.

Schemper’s score was two strokes behind individual champion Shane Miller of LaCrosse, who was playing on his home course.

The rest of Yates Center’s golf team “did pretty well for being so young and inexperienced,” Barnes said.

Remi Wagner placed 14th at 101. Jon Barnes shot 118 to take 20th. Eric Updegrove finished 24th with a 155, one stroke better than Cheyenne Gill, who placed 25th.

Yates Center’s team score of 457 put the Wildcats in fourth, 19 strokes out of qualifying for state as a team.

Cheylin-Bird took the team championship. LaCrosse was second, also qualifying for state. Cottonwood Falls finished third.

The Sand Green State Tournament is next Tuesday at Leonardville Golf Course near Manhattan.
