HUMBOLDT — This week’s rainy weather parted in time for a spectacular showing from local track and field athletes at Thursday’s Humboldt Invitational.

Twenty-seven schools from across eastern Kansas took part in the activities:

Among the highlights:

Iola High’s Mahailie Genoble was dominant in the girls 300-meter hurdles, winning gold in a blistering 49.57 seconds, nearly a second and a half better than her nearest pursuer.

Marmaton Valley High’s Brayden Lawson and Todd Stevenson both picked up gold in field events. Lawson won the javelin with a throw of 179 feet, 9 inches, while Stevenson was tops in the triple jump with a leap of 40’4.5” — a scant 1.5 inches beyond runner-up Ben Matthews of Caney Valley.

Humboldt’s Karingten Hall continued her domination in the 200-meter dash, winning with a time of 26.75 seconds, a full quarter-second ahead of runner-up Emmah Henson of Galena.

Peyton Schmidt of Crest romped to victory in the girls 3200-meter run, finishing in 13 minutes, 40.38 seconds, or a full 16 seconds better than Halo Hurd of Caney Valley.

Yates Center High’s Jayda Rice got into the act with her shot put-winning throw of 33’1”: a full 3 inches better than Harlie Owings of Eureka.

Crest’s 4×800-meter boys relay team — names were not available — won by 7 seconds.
