Kappa Alpha sorority helps with fundraisers

A number of items were discussed Monday at the monthly Kappa Alpha Chapter of Phi Tau Omega Sorority business meeting.

President Roberta Elli read the National President’s letter with an emphasis on chapters to help local “Feed the Hungry” by making donations to their area food pantries and backpack for kids programs.

Kappa Alpha member Susan Hoffmeier donated a quilt she made, and other members donated pies and cookies for a raffle and fundraiser Sunday for a local cancer patient. Proceeds went to help with travel expenses. 

Four gas cards had been given to cancer patients to help with their travel expenses. Two more requests for gas cards were submitted.

Kappa Alpha members helped with the annual Reading Festival Saturday at Iola High School. An estimated 500 people attended.

Kappa Alpha will help the Iola Recreation Department again this year with the Santa Breakfast at the Iola Middle School Commons area Dec. 8. Kids can visit with Santa, while free pancakes and sausage or biscuits and gravy will be served to the first 400 in attendance. Families are asked to bring a canned good item per person to help support the Community Pantry.

The sorority also made a monetary donation to Barbara Chalker Anderson’s daughter and two granddaughters, who lost all of their household items, furniture and clothing due to black mold in a rental house in which they were living. Members  also are going to gather various household items and donate them.

The next Kappa Alpha social will be Nov. 19; the group will attend a movie at Iola’s Sterling Six Cinemas.

The next business meeting will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Community National Bank. Gwen Tefft and Collene Ellis will be hostesses.

 

Lutheran group hears about youth conference

Grace Lutheran LWML heard a report about the Higher Things youth conference at their Nov. 1 meeting at the church. “Santification” was the theme for the conference, held July 24-27 at the University of Kansas campus. Callie and Jorja Murcko gave a presentation on their experiences and activities at the conference. There were about 950 youth in attendance.

Members also reviewed the Halloween Trunk and Treat event, with no changes made.

They finalized plans for this year’s Soup, Bake & Bargains, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The next meeting is Dec. 6 to decorate the church for Christmas.

 

Fight erupts at prison

LARNED, Kan. (AP) — Officials say one inmate sustained minor injuries after several fights erupted at a western Kansas prison that houses mentally ill inmates.

Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Samir Arif says the fights broke out Tuesday at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, northwest of Wichita. The Wichita Eagle reports that several windows were broken, but no corrections officers were hurt.

The facility has been secured and authorities are investigating. It’s not clear what caused the fights.

Elsmore Ruritans plan pancake supper Saturday

ELSMORE — Elsmore Ruritan Club will have its annual pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Elsmore Community Building. Club members will serve pancakes, sausage, biscuits, gravy, eggs and a drink for a freewill donation. Monies will go to club’s general fund to be used for college scholarships next.

This year $1,300 was distributed to eight students to help with furthering their educations.

Tickets will be sold for dessert drawings held throughout the evening. Diners bringing an item for the Elsmore Blessing Box or a decoration for the Elsmore community Christmas tree, both west of the community building, will receive a free dessert drawing ticket. Blessing Box items can include non-perishable food, small household items such as dish detergent, bath or facial tissues, toothpaste/brush, etc.

Diners can shop for Christmas decorations and gift items donated by club members and browse the community building’s variety of used books, which are free for the taking.

Each year the Ruritan club, with 48 members, helps Marmaton Valley schools, activities and organizations. Treat bags are given students riding the bus from Elsmore to Moran at Halloween and Christmastime and treat bags and community calendars are given senior citizens at Christmas. Food boxes will be given to a dozen area families prior to Thanksgiving and food monthly is distributed through Humboldt Ministerial Alliance. The club supports the Allen County Fair, holds a dog/cat vaccination clinic each spring, helps maintain the city playground, community building and community garden and sponsors an Independence Day celebration and Elsmore Days celebration.

Iola voters gave overwhelming approval Tuesday to an extension of a half-cent sales tax to pay for road and street improvements. The vote was 825 in favor and only 242 opposed, for an approval percentage of 77.2.

Allen County commissioners this week struck a deal with Southeast Kansas Resource Conservation and Development to dispose of many of the 150,000 worn vehicle tires at the county landfill. At least some of the tires will be burned in Monarch Cement Co. kilns in Humboldt as supplemental fuel.

Robert A. Finney, 87, formerly of Humboldt, died Saturday at his home in Wichita. He was a civic leader in Humboldt and held a directorship at Humboldt National Bank until his death. A graduate of the University of Chicago in economics, he taught the subject at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa., and then operated a Ford dealership in Gallion, Ohio. He and Gertrude Leitzbach met in Chicago in 1933 and were married shortly thereafter. The couple moved to Humboldt in 1936 and lived there until 1966. During his years in Humboldt, he was manager of the Humboldt Brick and Tile Co. and was active in oil, agriculture and real estate investments. He served in the Kansas Legislature as Representative from Allen County. Finney and his wife moved to Wichita in 1966 where he founded and became president of the Farm and Ranch Life Insurance Co. A long-time member of the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce, he served as its president and was also a vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; a son, Paul, of Humboldt; two daughters, Ona Walls of Tustin, Calif., and Judy Fugate of Lexington, Ky., and four grandchildren.

 

McCollum scores 40 as Trail Blazers beat Bucks

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — CJ McCollum scored 40 points and the Portland Trail Blazers beat Milwaukee 118-103 on Tuesday night, handing the Bucks their second loss in 10 games this season.

McCollum, who entered shooting well below his career averages, went 17 for 26 from the field and added six assists. Evan Turner had 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Blazers (8-3).

Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 23 points and nine rebounds. Brook Lopez shot 6 for 10 from 3-point range and finished with 22 points.

In the third quarter, McCollum put on a show. He scored 19 points and made Bucks rookie guard Donte DiVincenzo fall down on a crossover move before hitting a basket, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

 

HORNETS 113, HAWKS 102

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kemba Walker had 29 points and seven assists, extending his strong start to the season as Charlotte beat Atlanta.

Marvin Williams added 20 points for the Hornets (6-5), who won for the third time on a four-game homestand. Walker has scored 25 or more seven times in 11 games.

Jeremy Lamb and Malik Monk each had 13 points for Charlotte. Nic Batum scored 10.

Playing against his former team, Jeremy Lin had 19 points off the bench to lead the Hawks (3-7), who led by seven late in the first half.

 

MAVERICKS 119, WIZARDS 100

DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic scored 23 points and Dennis Smith Jr. made three key plays down the stretch as Dallas ended a six-game losing streak.

It was the Mavericks’ 16th win in their last 17 meetings with the Wizards. Wesley Matthews added 22 points for Dallas, and Harrison Barnes had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

John Wall led the Wizards with 24 points. Otto Porter Jr. and Bradley Beal had 19 each, but Beal was 1 for 9 on 3-point attempts.

Washington trailed by 24 in the first half and 21 at halftime, but forced 11 Dallas turnovers in the second half and climbed back into the game behind its top three players.

The Wizards were within six when Smith scooted past Dwight Howard to grab an offensive rebound and fed a cutting DeAndre Jordan for a dunk that put the Mavs up 101-93 with 5:33 left.(backslash)

PHOENIX (AP) — Caris LeVert scored 26 points, D’Angelo Russell added 15 and Brooklyn beat struggling Phoenix.

The Nets won their third game in the past four, while the Suns have lost eight of nine.

Devin Booker led Phoenix with 20 points but made just 6 of 21 shots. Deandre Ayton had 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

Brooklyn held the Suns to a season low in points and field goal shooting at 34.6 percent.

Making it count

Voters flocked to the polls this morning to cast their ballot and vote in today’s General Election. Gas Community Center was averaging about a voter each minute, with about 35 voters in the first 35 minutes after the polling station opened at 7 a.m. Polls are open until 7 p.m. Look for results on the Register’s Facebook page later this evening.

Community seeks a logo

The City of Moran is in search of a logo.

Artists of all ages are invited to submit their proposed drawings by the end of the year.

The logo will be used on city promotional materials, City Council members said Monday.

The Council hopes to pick a winner in early 2019.

 

MV presents ‘Just Another’ play

MORAN — What happens if a drama instructor abandons her students on the eve of Opening Night?

Marmaton Valley High School’s Drama Department explores such a scenario with “Just Another High School Play,” which runs at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the high school’s old gymnasium.

An ensemble cast is featured in the play, which follows the story of a drama instructor, so dismayed that none of her students have been showing up for rehearsals, decides to skip town for Mexico.

The students arrive for the premiere unsure of how o respond, until a student assistant director and stage manager find a box of scripts in an attempt to throw something together.

What follows is a number of humorous interpretations of everything from Shakespeare to your prototypical melodrama.

A cast of 20 will present “Just Another High School Play” under the direction of Halie Luken.

Tickets for the school’s 20th annual dessert theater cost $3 for students and $6 for adults.

Dessert will be served at intermission, courtesy of Simply Delicious Catering.

 

Nancy Epley

Nancy Margaret Epley, age 89, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, at Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola. Margaret was born June 12, 1929, in Hutton Valley, Missouri, to William H. and Nellie Farris Edmonds.

Margaret was married to Everett R. Wells.  He preceded her in death in 1959. Margaret married Orlin “Bonnie” Epley. He preceded her in death in 1993.

Margaret worked for Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels, Iola, for 45 years, retiring in 2005. 

Margaret is survived by three children, Gary Wells and wife, Gail, Grand Prairie, Texas, Paula Sell and husband, Dee, Iola, Kansas, and Patricia Karnjanapanang and husband, Kit, Lampasas, Texas; six grandchildren, Matthew Wells (Heather), Cody Wells (Marcy), Ryan Sell (Anissa), Eryn Sell (Jason), Eric Karnjanapanang, Darrell Karnjanapanang (Nicole); 13 great-grandchildren, Lincoln Wells, Landon Wells, Baylee Wells, Kenzee Wells, Taylor Sell, Jordan Schoenberger, Drew Schoenberger, Drake Sell, Jalynn Schoenberger, Chloe Sell, Thomas Chapman, Alyssa Karnjanapanang, and Alexis Karnjanapanang.

There will be a private family inurnment at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to Allen County Regional Hospital, and may be left with Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Iola, Kansas.
