A $500 increase in the base salary for teachers was approved by the board of education last night. The hike will bring the base salary to $5,700 for beginning teachers with a bachelor’s degree. Teachers who have advanced degrees and experience in the classroom will receive larger increases.

HUMBOLDT — Charles Fussman was elected president of Monarch Cement Co. of Humboldt by the board of directors and Walter Wulf stepped up from the presidency to the newly created position of chairman of the board and chief executive officer. Fussman becomes the fourth president in the company’s history. Wulf will soon be celebrating his 55th year with the company.

Dr. John Schmaus of Iola has been invited to participate in the Second International Symposium on Toxicology to be held in Tel Aviv. He is recognized internationally for the work he has done on brown spider bites and other insect and snake venoms. In addition to participating in the symposium he has also been asked to write the chapter on “Bites of Spiders and other Arthropods” for the 22nd edition of Current Therapy, which will be issued in 1976. Dr. Schmaus practices medicine in Iola with his father, Dr. Lyle Schmaus.
