‘He will be missed’

A young man, bold, he went to fight,

Through wars and years, defending what’s right.

Saw the flag rise, a poignant sight,

A hero’s journey, day and night.

With age, he shared tales by the fire,

A life lived fully, through muck and mire.

When he passed, the nation shed a tear,

Laid to rest with honor, a hero dear.

In Arlington’s embrace, he finds peace,

A symbol of courage that will never cease.

A love nation, with heavy hearts,

Bids farewell, but his legacy imparts.

Perhaps just a simple caption

In the tabloid that would display:

“Our grateful nation mourns,

A GI perished this day.”

(Editor’s note: Iolan Art Lohmeyer penned this column for Memorial Day in recognition of those who have died in service of the country. )
