After two extensions and multiple advertisements in area publications, the Healthy Allen award offered by The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City (HCF) has yet to receive a single nomination.
“I’d hate to not award this money in Allen County,” said Jennifer Sykes, HCFcommunications director.
If any worthy nominations are received, the $5,000 award will be presented to an individual or organization that promotes good health among uninsured and underserved residents of Allen County.
“Whether it’s a teacher who encourages healthy lifestyles for his or her students or a volunteer who drives those needing health care to an appointment or perhaps an organization that advocates for access to health care for the uninsured, the award recipient should play a role in making his or her community healthier for low-income individuals and families,” HCF said in a release.
Anyone can make a nomination, for themselves or another person or organization. If an individual is awarded the money, they can choose to donate the funds to any organization of their choice.
Nominations are reviewed and the winner is selected by a panel of judges representing the HCF Board of Directors, Community Advisory Committee and other associates.
Last year, Joe Works of Humboldt’s B&W Trailer Hitches won the $5,000 award for keeping a full staff despite a downturn in the economy and decreased orders. Works kept his idled employees busy by performing construction and maintenance duties for the City of Humboldt.
Works gave the generous stipend to Hope Unlimited. He was one of 17 nominees.
“(HCF) had more nominations for Allen County than we had for the entire  Kansas City area last year, so I was expecting a lot this year,” Sykes said. “If everybody that applied last year could do it again this year that would be great.”
The deadline for award nominees was extended one last time to Sept. 15. Nominations should be in the form a 500 word or less letter and include the nominee’s name and contact information as well as information for the person making the nomination. Send the nomination letters to [email protected] or to Jennifer Sykes – HCF, at 2700 E 18th Street, Suite 220, Kansas City Mo. 64127.
