LAHARPE — A pair of local organizations have big plans in the coming months.
LaHarpe City Council members were told about upcoming projects through the LaHarpe Days Homecoming Committee and LaHarpe PRIDE.
Barb Crites, chair of the LaHarpe City Days group, said a fundraiser is in the works, which will help somebody pay his local utility bill. Crites said that the monies will be raised through a drawing, in which residents pay $1 to enter. If their name is drawn, $100 will go to that resident’s city utility bill.
Meanwhile, council members gave the go-ahead for LaHarpe PRIDE to set up a temporary ice skating facility at the LaHarpe City Park this winter. LaHarpe PRIDE hopes to open the rink in the softball diamond infield area.
Council members also discussed with Evelyn Maloney her hopes to see a library board set up to help oversee the city’s new drop box library at City Hall.
Maloney said that with a library board, it would be easier to seek grants to help fund basic operations.
LaHarpe City Attorney Chuck Apt suggested the library board be a private, voluntary group because of the statutory requirements to have a public board. The LaHarpe library would function under the umbrella of the Iola Public Library and the Southeast Kansas Public Library System.
Council members appointed Sandy Northcutt to fill the unexpired term of Ron Knavel Sr., who resigned his council seat earlier this year. They chose Northcutt because she had previously ran for the seat. Council members Mike Peres, Harry Lee Jr. and Ivan Trester voted for Northcutt’s appointment. Council member Gerald Clay was absent.
