September 1995

Gates Rubber of Iola today announced that it will build an 80,000-square-foot addition to its warehouse here which will lead to substantially greater distribution of hose from Iola.

Farm-City Days will move to later in the year in 1994. The event will be held Oct. 20-22, breaking the long-time tradition of holding the event on the last week of August.

Friday was a happy day for two Allen County residents. Yetti Shapel, Iola, and Dr. George Boutros, Humboldt, became U.S. citizens in a ceremony in Kansas City.

History:

On September 27, 1939, Warsaw, Poland, surrendered after weeks of resistance to invading forces from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II.

On this date:

In 1825, the first locomotive to haul a passenger train was operated by George Stephenson in England.

In 1854, the first great disaster involving an Atlantic Ocean passenger vessel occurred when the steamship SS Arctic sank off Newfoundland; of the more than 400 people on board, only 86 survived.
