GARNETT — The traffic circle at the intersection of U.S. 59 and U.S. 169 just south of Garnett is back open — about four months ahead of schedule.
The Kansas Department of Transportation announced in a press release the roundabout reopened this week.
Work began last May on the project to enlarge the lanes and realign entrances and exits, according to the KDOT press release.
While the roundabout is open, work remains, including pavement marking and erosion control.
A road built east of the traffic circle to carry motorists around the work zone will remain as an emergency lane, closed to the public except for first responders and oversized loads.
Clarkson Construction Co. of Kansas City, Mo., handled the $5.9 million project.
MEANWHILE, another project will commence next week south of Humboldt on U.S. 169.
Crews will begin pavement patching and bridge repair along 2.2 miles of the highway.
A traffic light will guide a single lane of traffic at a time through the work zones. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
The first stage begins north of the southbound U.S. 169 exit for 1150 Street. The work zone will be about four-tenths of a mile long.
The second stage starts south of Arizona Road.
The final stage begins about a half-mile north of stage two.
The project is expected to be completed by May, conditions permitting.
