In a twist she may or may not have seen coming, Kaite Stover is calling off her evening of Tarot card reading Thursday at the Iola Public Library.

City officials were notified of the event and asked if fortune-telling is against the law in Iola.

It is.

An ordinance forbids “fortunetellers and clairvoyants,” Library director Sharon Moreland learned Friday.

“It shall be unlawful for any person to engage in the business of, or to accept any consideration directly or indirectly for, or in connection with, the foretelling of, or pretending to foretell, future events, or the communication, or pretext thereof, with the spirits of the deceased, in any manner, or by any means, without first obtaining a license,” the ordinance reads.

“If we pay her, she may be in violation,” Moreland told the Register in an email.

Stover, a cartomancer, is a student and reader of the tarot for more than three decades.

She has been reading cards at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival since 2007. Her day job is director of reader services at the Kansas City Public Library.
