Memorial Day services in Highland Cemetery will begin at 11 a.m. this year with a flag raising, 21-gun salute and playing of “Taps.”
Maj. Erica (Hillbrant) Christie of Hays will be the guest speaker.
Christie, daughter of Jim and the late Lucille Hillbrant of Iola, is an active duty serviceman in the Army National Guard. She is the first female speaker at the event, which has been held since 1917 or 1918, American Legion member Tim Emmons said.
In case of rain, the ceremony will move to the American Legion Hall, 712 W. Patterson Ave.
