It was Christmas Eve 1925 when Arlene Rachel Ellis Weseloh, 92, of rural Yates Center, Kan., came into this world and April 21, 2018, when she entered her heavenly home.
Arlene was born Dec. 24, 1925, at the home of her grandparents, John and Caroline Hasstedt in rural Piqua, Kan., the daughter of Arthur R. and Louise C. (Hasstedt) Ellis. She lived in Woodson County her entire life.
Arlene was baptized, March 21, 1926, at her grandparents home and confirmed Sept. 14, 1941, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Humboldt. She graduated from Vernon High School in 1943, and then attended Pittsburg State College and Emporia Teachers College before earning an emergency teaching certificate. She taught in several rural schools from 1943 to 1946. On May 19, 1946, Arlene married Virgil R. Weseloh at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Together they had two children: daughter, Nancy Weseloh Taylor and son, Jim Weseloh. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage until Virgil died on July 2, 2008.
In her early years of marriage Arlene was a Mother and homemaker. In fall of 1962 she returned to Iola Junior College and earned her associates degree and substitute teaching certificate. In fall of 1966 she again returned to Emporia State College full time and graduated in August of 1967 and immediately stated teaching third and fourth at Piqua Grade school. At the close of the Piqua school, Arlene transferred to Yates Center Elementary School and taught third grade until she retired in 1989. After retirement she was involved with Woodson County Fair board, Farm Bureau, and Retired teacher association. She also took back an active role of running the family farm.
Arlene was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church of Iola, and remained an active member until her death. She was active in teaching Midweek Bible classes to young children, VBS and LWML, and serving on various boards and committees.
Arlene is survived by her daughter and care giver, Nancy Taylor; her son, Jim Weseloh; six grandchildren, Dawn Weseloh, Chad Taylor and wife, Lisa, Travis Weseloh and wife, Kathy, Jason Taylor and wife, Stacy, Dustin Taylor and wife, Carrie, and Lindsay Weseloh and fiance, Shawn; daughter-in-law, Linda Weseloh; 22 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Virgil; parents; son-in-law, Charles Taylor; three great-granddaughters; and her sister, Dorothy Ratzlaff.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Grace Lutheran Church, 117 E. Miller Rd., Iola. Rev. Bruce R. Kristalyn will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m., Friday evening at the church.
