Edward Joseph “Ed” King, 85, of rural Piqua died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.
He was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to John F. and Lillian G. (Eckroat) King. He grew up in and attended school in the Oklahoma City area. At 18, he moved with his family to Piqua.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On Sept. 18, 1950, he married Elizabeth “Bessie” Prescher in Scotland, Texas. They made their home in Piqua and Muenster, Texas, until 1963 when he farmed full-time in Piqua. He had also worked as an auto mechanic.
He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post No. 13 in Yates Center, Yates Center Zoning Board and was chairman of the Yates Center senior center. He had won numerous awards for soil conservation over the years. He also liked to play cards.
He is survived by his wife of the home; eight children, Delores Henderson and her husband, Forrest, LaGrange, Ind., Joseph Edward and his wife, Roxanne, Wichita, John F. and his wife, Martha, St. Mary’s, Cecelia Poffenbarger, Iola, Lillian Meyers and her husband, Jeff, Crestview, Fla., David M. and his wife, Heather, Derby, Cynthia Coari and her husband, Kenneth, Troy, Ill., and Mary C. Bode and her husband, Larry, Ozark, Mo.; two sisters, Lillian Clark, Lawrence, and Joan Horn, Crystal River, Fla.; 24 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A grandson, Justin King, brothers, Paul and A.B., and a sister, Mary Royston, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.
Parish Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Thursday followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. The Rev. Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Gas.
