Freddie Leon Thompson, 72, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Moran Manor following a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia.
He was born March 19, 1943, in Moran, the first of seven children born to Fred and Illah (Pool) Thompson. He attended Moran schools and graduated from Marmaton Valley High School in 1961.
On June 10, 1962, Leon married Judith Klimek at United Methodist Church in Moran. They later divorced. He later married Judith Holinsworth on July 23, 1997, in Miami, Okla. She died Thursday, May 28, 2015.
Leon was a member of the Kansas Auctioneers Association, Mirza Shrine, Marmaton Masonic Lodge, The Kansas Livestock Association, he was a former board member of the Kansas Beef Council, Iola Elks Lodge and Salem United Methodist Church.
Leon formerly worked for the ASCS office in Iola and Farm Bureau Insurance Company. He was former owner and co-owner of the Allen County Livestock Auction. He also worked as an auctioneer with Bud Butts and later with son Kent with Thompson and Thompson Auction Service.
Leon is survived by two sons, Kent and wife Susan, rural LaHarpe, and Kurt and wife Cheryl, Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Kenna (Thompson) Chesnut, Springfield, Mo., Kyler Thompson, Pittsburg, and Mia and Ami Thompson, Springfield, Mo.; stepdaughter Cindy Holinsworth, Humboldt, stepson Steve (Barnie) Holinsworth, Pittsburg; stepgranddaughters Lauren and Paige Holinsworth, Pittsburg, and Aliza and Alivia Benedict, Pittsburg; two brothers, Darrell (Sandy) Thompson and Larry Thompson, all of Iola; four sisters, Cheryl (Robert) Welch, Moran, twin sisters Nina Worthington, Mound City, and Nita (Bob) Hunt, Marysville, Ohio, and Linda (Chuck) Heffern, Iola. He also is survived by his special aunt, Nina Lee Johnson, Elsmore, and many special extended family members.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Moran United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Moran Cemetery
