Margaret Yvonne (Dreher) Percy, 80, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, at her home in Roeland Park surrounded by family.
Yvonne was born in Springer, N.M. She grew up in New Mexico; Amarillo, Texas; and Iola. She graduated from Iola High School, where she was a cheerleader and was active in theater.
She eloped with Claude Orris Percy in 1953, much to the consternation of their brothers Lyle and Curly. Yvonne and Claude moved to the Kansas City area in 1955. They eventually settled in Westwood, where they lived for 41 years.
Yvonne worked at Westwood View Elementary School to put their three children through college. Many remember her fondly as “the lunch lady.” She later started at GTE Valenite as a part-time secretary and became office manager. Yvonne and Claude made many lifelong friends while enjoying their hobbies of sailing, traveling and birding. They belonged to the Jacomo Sailing Club, FJ Fleet No. 1 and sailed at Weatherby Lake for many years.
She was known for helping others — neighbors, friends and family. She had a special ability to bring people together and create community wherever she went. She was often described as feisty, packing a lot of spunk in a petite package.
Yvonne is predeceased by her brother, Lyle Dreher, and his wife, Carolyn. She is survived by her husband, Claude; their children Audrey Muenz (Steve), Clayton Percy (Karen Lordi) and Rosalind Percy; her grandchildren, Nick and Zack Muenz and Henry, Diana and Julia Percy; her brother, Stanley Dreher Jr. and wife Maxine; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be planning a service at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, http://www.kchospice.org.
