Ofelia Dolores (Dee) Cannon, 74, of Shawnee and formerly of Iola and Garnett died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at her home.
She was born Jan. 16, 1936, in Iola, to Joe and Maria Mercedes (Arambula) Ornelas. She grew up in Iola where she graduated from St. John’s School and from Iola High School in 1954. She attended Mercy School of Nursing in Fort Scott graduating in 1957 and later took graduate courses at the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
On April 25, 1959, she married James F. Cannon Jr. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. She worked as head nurse at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City from 1959 until her retirement in 1991.
She was awarded many certificates and enjoyed her nursing career. She also enjoyed traveling and reading.
She is survived by her husband of the home; three brothers, John Ornelas, Chanute, Reuben Ornelas, Texas, and David Ornelas, Wichita; a sister, Mary Ornelas, Kansas City; a number of nieces and nephews; and her dog, Baby.
Four brothers, Joe Jr., Frank, Nacho and Nello Ornelas, and an infant sister, Carmen Ornelas, died earlier.
Cremation has taken place.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery in Iola. The Rev. Robert Wachter will officiate.
