Richard Eugene Culbertson, 69, Iola, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at his home.
He was born April 27, 1947, in Gas, to Lester and Julia (Hunsaker) Culbertson. He grew up in California, and worked there for several years as a route salesman. After moving to Kansas, he worked for many years as a custodian for USD 257, where he enjoyed being around the schoolchildren, encouraging them to share his love of reading. He loved spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Sue, his parents and a sister, Phyllis Hutchins.
Richard is survived by his children Joelle Shallah and husband Sam, Iola, Richard Culbertson Jr., Red Bluff, Calif., and Matthew Culbertson and wife Shelly, Chanute; grandchildren Brittany Jensen and husband Dakota, Sam Shallah, Ryan Chapman and wife Brandi, Zachery Culbertson and Ashton Culbertson; great-grandchildren Adyson Shallah, Piper Jensen, Cash Jensen, Zoey Jensen, Coral Jensen and Timberlyn Chapman; sister-in-law Pat Baker; and several nieces.
A funeral service for Richard will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery in Iola. Visitation is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions in his memory are suggested to the McKinley Elementary School Library Fund.
