Steven Eugene Phillips, 68, passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at Olathe Medical Center. Steve was born Sept. 13, 1948, in Gas. He is the son of Lee and Colleen Gumfory. Steve was the oldest of four children. There were two infants who preceded him in death in Iola.
Steve was a lifelong resident of Iola, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Steve was an Army Specialist Four and was a member of the 1st Battalion, 69th Armor 4th Infantry Division. Steve served in Vietnam where he served to defend his country for 14 months. Steve received several commendations which include the Bronze star with Valor and a Purple Heart, which he refused because he felt it wasn’t honorably deserved due to friendly fire.
After returning from the war, Steve married Connie Lindsay of Bush City on Oct. 31, 1969, in Bush City, at the home of Connie’s parents and were married for 47 years. Together they moved to Iola and on Dec. 21, 1970, were blessed with twin boys Michael Lee and Mitchell Eugene.
In the early years of their marriage, Steve worked with his father Lee at Zero Packing Company. Steve also worked at Williams Monument Company, and was the manager at Iola Cable TV before taking a job with Berg Manufacturing. Steve retired from Russell Stover.
Steve is survived by his wife, Connie, of the home; sons Michael and wife Jennifer Phillips, Iola, and Mitchell and wife Amanda Phillips, Iola; his parents, Lee and Colleen Gumfory, Iola; his mother-in-law, Dixie Lindsay, also of Iola; and three sisters, Connie Lee Miller and Roy Caler, LaHarpe, Roxy Peters, Iola, and Debbie and husband Lewis Clark, Iola; sister-in-law Linda and husband Joe Michael, Humboldt, and Cindy Lindsay, Garnett; an uncle Charles and wife Eunice Lindsay, Oakley; an aunt Betty Raines, Le Roy; and numerous aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews
Steve was preceded in death by father-in-law Emmett Lindsay, three brothers-in-law Vaughn Tomlinson, Jerry Lindsay and Joe Peters, and uncle George Lindsay.
Steve’s service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Visitation is 6 to 7 tonight at the funeral home. Contributions in Steve’s memory may be made to ACARF or to the Steve Phillips Memorial Fund and left in care of the funeral home.
