Traditionally Republican Allen County was swept by a Democratic landslide yesterday as more Democrats were elected to local offices than in any year since the 1930s. Local voters also gave Gov. George Docking, seeking re-election, a 216-lead over Clyde Reed, Republican from Parsons. The county gave resounding approvals to the three amendments to the state constitution. Iolas voters turned down the city manager plan, 1,357 to 1,191. Dr. A. R. Chambers was re-elected to the state legislature, defeating Fred Hoye, 3,443 to 2,557. Mrs. Mabel Sage of Humboldt polled the heaviest vote of the county Democratic candidates, defeating Mrs. Una Todd, Moran, 3,291 to 2,740 for county superintendent of schools. Mrs. Maxine Abbott of Iola, Democrat, was elected county clerk, defeating incumbent Republican Joe Littrell, 3,257 to 2,773. Voting was heavy throughout the county. About 5,350 went to the polls.

Second District Cong. Errett Scrivner, running for his eighth term, was defeated by Democrat Newell George, a Kansas City lawyer. The Democrats took over the House of Representatives, 277 Democrats elected to 141 Republicans with 18 seats still undecided. The six-member Kansas delegation was divided equally, three Democrats and three Republicans. The Kansas House of Representatives remained in Republican hands, 69 to 56.

Todays Veterans Day celebration featured a parade at 1 p.m. with 24 floats and 36 high school and junior college bands led by the Forbes Air Force Base color guard. A flag-raising ceremony was held in front of the west entrance of the new Allen County Courthouse. The celebration closed with an exhibition basketball game between a pro team, Pecks Bad Boys, and a team of Junior College all-stars in the community building, and two dances, one in Riverside Park and one in the Community Building on Buckeye.
