With every new year comes familiar resolutions: To lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The Iola Recreation Department is offering a fitness class that can help push anyone looking to get healthier in the right direction.
The Insanity workout class is being offered on Monday and Wednesday nights and Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting Jan. 12. The morning workouts begin at 5:30 a.m. and last 30 minutes. The evening workouts begin at 6:30 p.m. and last 50 minutes. Each session is for six weeks and costs $30. Those 18 and above can register for the class at the Recreation Office by Jan. 9.
“Every time we do an insanity workout, I think it’s probably the hardest workout I’ve ever done,” instructor Sarah Noah, 37, said. “I don’t want that to scare anybody away because a veteran can still be just as challenged as a person who is trying it for the first time.”
Noah began teaching the class last fall, as well as leading the PiYo exercise class also offered at the rec department. Noah is certified to teach both classes.
“It will change your body and hearth health,” Noah said. “There is a lot of plyometrics involved which is ‘jumping.’ If you’re not ready to jump when you’re a beginner, you can just take the jump out and basically step.”
With the new year, Noah is expecting more people to sign up for the upcoming session.
“I really hope so. We really have a lot of fun in class,” Noah said. “If word gets around that people are having a good time and are challenged, more people should come and enjoy it with us. ‘Enjoying’ might be a stretch because it’s really tough. But, it’s fun and you feel really great when it’s done.”
The class is also good for fit people looking for something new to do for exercise.
“I think it would be perfect,” Noah said. “I love it. It’s kind of a thrill for me because it’s a constant challenge and you’re definitely going to sweat.”
Although it isn’t required for a person to change their diet during the Insanity workout stretch, a lot do.
Noah said eating habits are the biggest difference in trying to lose weight.
“It’s completely up to you. Diet is up to 80 percent of how people are trying to change their weight,” Noah said. “That’s the biggest difference, by changing how you eat and the amount you eat. It’s not required, but any step in the right direction is good.”
Noah said that her class can help kickstart anybody’s new year’s resolution on getting healthy.
“It’s an individual’s workout. If you came to the class and needed to take a little bit of a break if it’s too much for you, that would be perfectly fine,” Noah said. “If I was going to give anybody advice, it would be to just keep coming back. We will take a fitness class at the beginning of the class and then we will take another fitness class a month later to see the change and gauge it for themselves.”
