The Allen County men’s and women’s basketball teams continue to be in the hunt for their first conference wins of the season after both teams fell at rival Neosho County on Thursday. The Red Devils lost 79-56 while the Lady Devils lost a squeaker, 91-90.
For the men, it was their second loss in a row as they fall to 2-4 on the season while the women have lost their last four games, three by seven points or fewer. They are 2-4 so far this season.
The women lost a dogfight.
It was close all evening with the Lady Devils leading 25-23 after the first quarter. The Lady Devils extended that lead by two more points, going into the second half up 42-38.
Allen kept their steady lead increase going in the third quarter up six after a Panther nailed a three at the buzzer.
The three ball was flying early with Allen County, hitting six from beyond the arc in the first half at a 43 percent clip but the second half saw some struggles as the Lady Devils hit just one of seven.
The fourth quarter was where it slipped away. The Lady Panthers cut the lead to one but the Lady Devils pushed the lead back out to four with two and a half minutes left.
An Allen foul on a shot turned into an old-fashioned three-point play for the Panthers allowing them to take their first lead since the first quarter, 83-82 with 1:51 left.
Neosho extended that lead to four with 28 seconds left but a three from sophomore Tamera Shaver cut the lead to one. Two free throws were hit by both sides before Shaver struck again, this time stealing the inbound pass and laying it in with 11 seconds left to play to take a 90-89 lead.
Neosho County went coast-to-coast in that 11 seconds and Shariah Smith laid the ball in grab the lead back from the Lady Devils with a little more than three seconds remaining. Allen County put a prayer as the clocked ticked to zero but it was no good.
Sophomore Kamri Summons had 25 to lead the way for the Lady Devils while Shaver had 24. Both had a team-high four steals.
Freshman Destiny Pittman was big off the bench, recording a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
The turnover bug continues to eat away at the Lady Devils. They recorded 27 in the game.
