Area girls win TRL track event titles

PLEASANTON — Uniontown High’s Abbie Smith is a triple-triple Three Rivers League track champion. The senior won the 100-meter high hurdles, the long jump and the 300-meter low hurdles in Thursday’s  TRL track meet.
Uniontown’s girls had five event champions at the 2010 Three Rivers League track meet hosted by Pleasanton High School. Crest High’s Lady Lancers claimed three event championships and Marmaton Valley High’s girls had one event champion.
Oswego claimed the team title with 177 points. Crest was third with 112 followed by Uniontown with 90 and Marmaton Valley with 30.
Smith had no trouble defending her titles in the hurdle races. She won the 100 highs in 16.07 seconds, four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She finished three seconds ahead of the field in the 300 hurdles in 51.56 seconds.
Smith captured gold in the long  jump with a leap of 17 feet, 23⁄4 inches. That was two feet farther than the second-place finisher.
Uniontown’s Jessica Schaaf held off Crest’s Ashley Catt to win the 1600-meter run. Schaaf’s winning time was 6 minutes, 24.28 seconds with Catt in second at 6:26.24.
Schaaf battled Crest’s Italy Loving in the 3200-meter run. Schaaf won the race in 13:58.14 with Loving in second at 14:05.8. Loving took second in the 800-meter run in 2:54.24 with teammate Amber Tinsley in sixth at 4:35.
Marmaton Valley High’s Mercedes Trollope is the TRL triple jump champion. She won it with a leap of 30’31⁄2”. Crest’s Katrina Strickler was third at 27’10” and Marmaton Valley;s Lydia Lance took fifth at 24’5”.
In the long jump, Trollope was fifth at 13’8” and Crest’s K. Strickler was eighth at 12’111⁄2”. Trollope was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 1:01.78 and Lance was seventh in 1:03.14.
Crest High’s Kurston Gilliland claimed the shot put championship by one inch over Uniontown’s Jacy Ermel. Gilliland’s winning throw was 33’7” with Ermel at 33’6”.
Also in the shot put, Crest’s Amber Tinsley was fourth at 27’5” followed by Rachel Boyd of Marmaton Valley in fifth at 26’11”. Abby Dixon of Uniontown placed eighth at 24’21⁄2”.
Gilliland is also the discus champion, winning it with a throw of 93’6”. Ermel was third at 88’7” followed by Crest’s Amanda Strickler in fourth, 85’5”, and Tinsley in fifth at 70’8”. Bethany Ericson of Uniontown took eighth at 64’4”.
The Lady Lancers went 1-2-3 in the javelin and the Eagle girls were 4-5-6. Shayla Stephens won the event with a throw of 117’4” followed by CHS teammates A. Strickler at 104’4” and Gilliland at 103’11”.
Ermel placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 91’6”. Ericson was fifth at 77’1” and Dixon took sixth at 75’9”.
In the 100-meter dash, Uniontown’s Lauren Rockhold was sixth in 14.45 and Crest’s Stephens was seventh in 14.70. Rockhold took third in the 200-meter dash in 30.65, with Trollope of MVHS in sixth at 32.11 and Crest’s Stephens in eighth at 32.50.
Rockhold took sixth in the 400-meter dash in 1:08.78.
Crest’s 4×100-meter relay team of Stephens, Catt, A. Strickler and K. Strickler was fourth in 1:02. The CHS 4×400-meter relay team of Catt, Loving, Gilliland and Tinsley was third in 6:02.
Catt, Loving, Stephens and Strickler combined for third place in the 4×800-meter relay race in 12:47.
