HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School’s girls rebounded nicely from their slow start Thursday.
The Lady Cub A team was tied 1-1 with visiting Yates Center after one quarter before taking control with a 9-3 run that spanned the second period. The fun continued with a 10-5 third-quarter run.
“We couldn’t get anything to fall in that first quarter, but luckily, neither could they,” Humboldt head coach Scott Brady said. “After that, the girls really went out and took over. They really did a good job of pushing the ball and scoring in transition.
Maggie Johnson had 12 points and seven steals for Humboldt, followed by Rylan Wilhite with seven points. Kassie Angleton scored four and Kaiti Carpenter, Chassis Hoepker and Sydney Houk each had two.
Yates Center’s B team prevailed, 14-11. Kaylie Johnson scored four for Humboldt. Sydney Barker and Lizzie Myers both had two. Scoring one apiece were Britnee Works, Hannah Riebel and Katie Malone.
“The girls got a lot of good looks at the basket, but just couldn’t get much to fall,” Brady said.
Yates Center also won over Humboldt’s C team, 12-4. Katie Lott scored all four for the Lady Cubs. Tori White had eight rebounds.

IN BOYS action, Yates Center rolled to a 47-28 win in the A team game, while Humboldt cruised to a 34-8 B team victory. Humboldt also won the C team contest, 34-19.
Cub head coach Jeremy Weilert praised Yates Center’s A team.
“Yates Center is a very good basketball team,” he said. “We were unable to stop their dribble penetration. We settled for some bad shots.”

Zach Korte chipped in with two points and four rebounds. Collin Gillespie and Josh Vanatta both scored two. Hesston Murrow had one.
Weilert also praised Humboldt’s B team.
