KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There were plenty of reasons for the Kansas City Chiefs to be optimistic their porous defense, a big reason they were eliminated in the playoffs a year ago, would be vastly improved this season.

They hired a new and accomplished coordinator in Steve Spagnuolo. They brought traded for elite pass rusher Frank Clark. They signed talented free agent Tyrann Mathieu. They used two of their first three draft picks on safety Juan Thornhill and defensive lineman Khalen Saunders.

Besides, it’s not as if the Chiefs defense could get much worse.
