Steady progress for the still very young Humboldt wrestling team continued to advance over the weekend with the Cubs qualifying four wrestlers at the regional wrestling tournament in Eureka for the 3-2-1A State Tournament in Hays this weekend.
Humboldt’s wrestling program is three years old. Last year they sent three wrestlers to state with two of the three getting close to placing.
Senior Noah Johnson, Junior Dagen Goodner and sophomore Gunner Elder are each making a return trip to Hays and will be joined by senior Seth Hegwald.
Elder finished 2-1 and second overall in the 126-pound weight class, Goodner finished 4-1 and in third-place in the 182-pound weight-class, Johnson finished 4-1 and third in the 220-pound weight class and Hegwald finished 2-2 and fourth in the 195-pound weight class.
Josh Vanatta barely missed out on qualifying, finishing 3-2 and fifth in the 132-pound weight class and Clay Shannon went 1-2 in the 120-pound weight class.
As a team, Humboldt scored 74 points and finished ninth out of 20 total teams.
They will travel to FHSU-Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays on Friday for the first day of the tournament. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:45 a.m. and go throughout the day and then will pick up again on Saturday at 9 a.m.
