The Humboldt junior varsity football team has appeared to find a formula that works well for them.
Give the ball to running back Conor Haviland and rely on your defense to do the rest. That philosophy certainly worked on Monday as the Cubs dominated Neodesha and earned the 28-0 win.
Haviland finished the game with 150 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns.
The Humboldt defense was also on the top of its game and forced eight Neodesha turnovers.
Jacob Fudge had one interception. Cole Murrow had a pair of fumble recoveries while Caleb Klauman, Taylor Lassman, Joe Murrow, Cooper Jaro and Speed Hoepker each had one recovery.
Hoepker led the team with six tackles and Treyvor Comstock added five.
Jaro had four tackles as well.
While Haviland carried a bulk of the offensive load, Humboldt quarterback Kyler Allen was able to keep the defense honest with his passing ability.
“Kyler did a great job,” Humboldt coach Jeremy Weilert said.
Allen had six completions for 58 yards and threw a touchdown to Jackson Aikins.
Weilert thinks his team is capable of being even better though.
“At times we played great,” Weilert said. “But we had several mental lapses that led to touchdowns being called back due to penalties.”
