NEODESHA — Even with a smaller than normal contingent, Humboldt High’s track team fared well Thursday at the Neodesha Invitational.

Head coach Eric Carlson explained the Cubs held out several athletes who compete solely in throwing events so they could attend a meet Tuesday in Caney Valley.

Even so, Humboldt had several highlights.

Levi McGowen brought home a gold medal in the triple jump, clearing 41 feet, 1 inch, a personal record. He also took fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 400.

Drew Wilhite earned gold in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 16.35 seconds, and tied for second in the high jump  at 5’10”. Peyton Wallace finished a fraction of a second behind Wilhite in the 800, finishing in 2:16.77.

On the girls’ side, Morgan Sterling’s personal-best triple jump mark of 31’8” was good for second. McKenna Jones also set a personal record in taking second in the 3200. Kirstyn Murrow took third in the javelin and fourth in the triple jump.

The Lady Cub 4×800-meter relay team of Jones, Murrow, Anna Heisler and Carsyn Haviland took gold with a time of 11:33.

“We are still battling some injuries and sickness,” Carlson said. “Hopefully we can put that behind us these last few weeks.”

The Lady Cubs took fourth out of nine teams; the boys sixth out of 11.
