OSAWATOMIE — Breanna Stout was in a hurry Thursday, for good reason. IN JUNIOR varsity action, Iola’s 4×100 relay team of Klair Vogel, Mikaela Platt, Burtnett and Shannon Vogel teamed to finish second in 58.7 seconds. Platt, Burtnett, Trilby Bannister and Shannon Vogel finished fourth in the 4×200-meter relay in 2:07. Shannon Vogel, Platt, Burtnett and Trilby Bannister finished third in the 4×400-meter relay in 5:01.7.
The Iola High senior found herself competing in the pole vault, high jump and javelin simultaneously at the Osawatomie Invitational.
Stout was at the pole vault pit awaiting her next turn, having already clinched the gold medal, when the track announcer ordered her to report to the javelin arena nearly a half mile away, Iola head coach Marv Smith explained.
In rushing to get to the javelin, Stout missed a chance at bettering her pole vault height of 7 feet, 6 inches. But she was able to uncork a javelin throw of 104’1”, which earned her a silver medal.
Stout missed a shot at 8’6” in the pole vault, but still took home the win.
In the interim, she cleared 4’8” in the high jump, taking sixth.
Stout’s day highlighted a number of scintillating performances on the track and field for the Fillies.
Abigail Taylor won the gold medal in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12 minutes, 45 seconds, while Ashley Campbell took second in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.1.
Taylor followed up her gold with a silver in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:44.4.
Darci Collins also claimed second in the shot put with a distance of 34’2” and second in the discus at 88’9”.
Campbell, Stout, Cassie Delich and Olivia Bannister took home third in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 54.8 seconds. Valaree Burtnett took home third in the pole vault, clearing 6’6”.
Campbell finished third in the 200-meter dash at 27.8 seconds. Taylor, Campbell, Delich and Bannister finished fourth in the 4×400-meter relay in 4:35.5
Bannister chipped in with a fifth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 5’8”.
Delich took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles as well.
Iola was without the services of Emery Driskel, who was injured in a cycling accident, Smith said.
“Our girls scored very well,” Smith said, even though Anderson County, the team champion, had Iola outnumbered in several events.
“We will enter differently in the league meet, but they will be tough to overtake.”
Alexis Hobbs, Klair Vogel, Megan Smith and Jessica Oakley teamed up in the weight throwers relay, finishing third in 62.7 seconds.
