HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Middle School basketball program hosted Fredonia on Monday night in the Cubs’ first game of the new year.
Coach Jeremy Weilert’s A team nearly got the best of the Yellowjackets late in the game following a first half deficit, but it fell short and lost, 32-29.
Conor Haviland was the Cubs’ leading scorer with 13 points, but he also proved valuable on the boards by grabbing 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.
The rest of Humboldt’s scoring broke down as such: Isiah Coronado (6); Briar Orth (4); Josh Hull (3); Jackson Aikins (2); Gunner Elder (1).
Taylor Lassman didn’t record any points, but he added 3 rebounds.
“This was a tough one,” Weilert said. “We struggled in the first half and we were down 10 at halftime. We fought back to tie it up in the fourth quarter. Proud of the way the players never gave up.”
The Cubs’ B team had better luck in its 2016 debut. Humboldt defeated Fredonia, 26-24, for its first win of the season.
Drake Harrington was 2 points and 2 rebounds shy of a double-double as he finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The rest of the B team’s scoring, rebounding and blocking broke down as such: Drake Sellman (6 points, 4 rebounds); Drew Schoendaller (4 points, 5 rebounds); Thane Meadows (4 points, 5 rebounds); Luke Yokum (2 points); Jacob Grzybowske (2 points, 6 blocks).
Humboldt’s C team lost, 30-18. Jacob Grazybowski and Titan Michael each led the squad with 5 points. Thane Meadows and Reid Smith added 4 more points a piece.
On the girls side, coach Scott Brady’s A team managed to shake off its winter break rust early in the game and pull off a 37-23 victory over Fredonia.
Madi Gean led the Lady Cubs with 14 points while also adding 5 steals. Emma Johnson had 7 points, Alayna Johnson had 6 points and 7 rebounds and Bailey Goodell had 4 points and 5 steals.
But Humboldt’s do-everything player Monday night was Winter Snyder. She finished with 6 points, 12 rebounds, 15 steals and 6 assists.
“Winter was huge for us tonight,” Brady said. “It seemed like she was getting a steal and assist every time out of our press.”
The Lady Cubs improve to 5-0 on the season after the victory on Monday night.
“I was proud of them for gutting out a victory on a night that wasn’t their best,” Brady said.
The B team lost, 22-16. Maycie DeNoon recorded a double-double in the losing effort by putting up 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kirsten Roush, Serena Melendez and Zoey Wilson all finished with 2 points each.
