HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Middle boys and girls teams hosted Leon-Bluestem on Monday night.
The Cubs’ A and B teams won 47-37 and 22-14, respectively, while the C team lost, 10-4. The Lady Cubs A team won 21-12 as did the B team, 22-11.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Cubs A team trailed at halftime but made it a second half to remember in a nine-point victory. Lakyn Meadows led Humboldt offensively with nine points, followed by Jo Ellison’s six points and Leah Carman and Harlowe Rush’s three points apiece.
“We needed this one,” said Humboldt head coach Scott Brady. “Neither team played their best tonight but we gutted it out in the second half. Harlowe Rush had back-to-back steals that led to layups to give us a huge boost in the fourth.”
Humboldt also rebounded the ball well and played good defense. Meadows snatched a team-high eight boards, followed by Ellison’s seven rebounds and Rush’s six steals defensively.
The defensive effort allowed the Lady Cubs to come back from a 10-7 deficit at halftime.
“We couldn’t get much to go tonight,” Brady said. “I’m pretty sure we shot 14% from the field. I was proud of the girls for finding a way to win when it wasn’t their best night.”
The B team knocked off Leon-Bluestem, 22-11.
As with the A team game, the Lady Cubs trailed at halftime, 7-6, and forced turnovers in the second half to get back into the game. It was a team effort. Nine Lady Cubs scored in the 22-point game.
Jetta Mathews led the Lady Cubs offensively with five points while Bailey Daniels and Maggie McCullough each scored three points and Jordan Hencey, Nahla Jenkins, Carlie Weilert, Kaydence Whitworth and Hadley Galloway scored two points apiece.
“We really picked up the intensity in the second half and created some turnovers that led to some easy transition layups,” said Brady.
