The Humboldt Cubs’ growing pains continue after falling to Eureka 34-6 on the road last Friday.
Despite strong individual performances on the ground by junior running back Layne Wagner and senior Mason Sterling, the Eureka Tornados’ offense tore through Humboldt. The Tornados were leading 26-0 at halftime.
Sterling had a team-leading 155 all-purpose yards with 91 on the ground and 64 in the air after 7 of 15 passes. Wagner had 74 yards on 20 carries. Junior receiver Gavin Gunderman was third in rushing with one carry for nine yards and had three receptions for 35 yards. Kolton Hanson had a pair of catches for 11 yards, while junior receiver Brock Ivy and Wagner had one catch for 9 yards.
Defensively, Ivy had a team-leading 10 solo tackles, 13 total, and two tackles for loss. Gunderman had eight tackles, nine total, and one tackle for a loss. Sterling had six, eight total and two tackles for a loss. Sophomore defensive lineman Kameren McClenning registered the Cubs’ only sack.
With the loss, the Cubs fall to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Tri-Valley League. They step away from the TVL Friday when they host Prairie View Buffalos (3-1, 3-1) of the Pioneer League.
Prairie View’s only loss this season has come at the hands of their undefeated Pioneer League foe, the Santa Fe Trail Chargers (4-0, 4-0), 35-20 earlier this month. Prairie View opened the season with a 71-6 victory over Osawatomie, fell to Santa Fe Trail, edged perennial powerhouse Wellsville 42-35 and crushed the Burlington Wildcats 48-13 last Friday.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
