ERIE — Bryce Isaac is Humboldt’s Swiss Army knife.

Whether it is jumping, running or clearing the hurdles, Isaac is among the best the area has to offer.

The senior proved his versatility at the 3A regional meet in Erie on Friday by competing in four events. He qualified for state in all four events.

Isaac won the triple jump  with a 42’8.5” mark. Isaac also took third in both the long jump and 300-meter hurdles.

His teammates helped him secure a fourth event at state with a third-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay. Sophomore Noah Johnson, and seniors Wyatt Wehlage and Anthony Doran joined Isaac on the relay.

Wehlage and Doran also joined forces on a 4×800-meter relay and won the regional with a 8:46.24 time, their best of the year. That relay also included junior Joe Kline and senior Tanner Orth.

Kline and Wehlage each also qualified for state in the 800 meters. Kline took second at the regional and Wehlage was right behind him in third place.

Kline qualified for his third event in the 1600-meter run. He took second in the closest finish of the day. He was edged out by William Bailey of West Franklin by just two hundredths of a second, but still easily qualified for state.

Kalob Cleaver was the other Cub to earn state qualifications in multiple events.

The senior will be competing at state in both the shot put and discus. He took fourth in both events.

Colin Gillespie will round out the group of Cubs competing in Wichita. The sophomore won the high jump at regionals by clearing 6’.

All of these qualifiers were able to help Humboldt place second in the regional, just six team-points behind Caney Valley.

GIRLS

The Humboldt girls finished in fourth place in the regional and will send five athletes to the state meet.

Kaylie Johnson earned her spot with a first-place jump of 34’11.5 in the triple jump and a second-place showing in the long jump. Johnson is the only Cub freshman to qualify for state.

Her teammate Lizzie Myers will also compete in two events in Wichita next weekend.

Myers finished second in the 800-meter run with her best time of the season. She ran a 2:35.13.
