It’s full steam ahead for the Humboldt Lady Cubs going into Monday’s doubleheader against Bluestem.
After crushing Tri-Valley foe Neodesha Monday, the Lady Cubs turned their attention to another demolition project in Erie as they walked away with a pair of early stoppages in Thursday’s 13-1 and 15-0 sweep.
Senior pitcher Shelby Shaughnessy got the start in the opener allowing just one run in her complete-game victory while tallying eight strikeouts and allowing one walk.
Shaughnessy also tied junior third baseman Taevyn Baylor and sophomore outfielder Carlie Weilert for the team lead in RBIs with the trio each hitting two.
A Shaughnessy RBI grounder put the Lady Cubs on the scoreboard and a Baylor homer set the tone for the evening as Humboldt jumped out to a 2-0 lead. An RBI single from sophomore Kinley Hart took Humboldt’s lead to 4-0.
The Lady Cubs were just warming up.
In Humboldt’s next at-bat, junior shortstop Laney Hull kept the momentum going with an RBI single, then senior catcher Chanlynn Wrestler drove in Hull to make it a 6-0 game. Another error by Erie’s catcher resulted in a run for Humboldt, then an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Lakyn Meadows and a Weilert RBI single put the Lady Cubs within striking distance of an early stoppage, leading 9-0.
Another Baylor homer and a sacrifice fly by Shaughnessy put Humboldt over the mercy-rule hump, 11-0. A fourth-inning RBI double by freshman outfielder Bailey Daniels and Baylor scoring on another catcher error added a couple of insurance runs to the Lady Cubs’ blowout.
In the finale, sophomore pitcher Jo Ellison pitched a perfect game over four innings without tallying a single strikeout and relying on a defense, which committed one error. However, Erie committed eight errors and many with runners already in scoring position. The Lady Cubs racked up a 10-0 lead before the end of the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Kamry De La Torre and sophomore outfielder Leah Carman tied for the team lead with three RBIs apiece. Carman hit a perfect 3 of 3 in the batter’s box while De La Torre hit 2 of 3.
The Lady Cubs return to the diamond Monday when they host Bluestem for a doubleheader with first pitches set for 4:30 and 6 p.m.
