INDEPENDENCE — Originally, the Iola High track team was scheduled to go to Burlington on Tuesday. Instead, they traveled to a make-up meet in Independence. It turned out to be a good decision.
The varsity girls placed third overall.
Jo Lohman ran the 1600-meter run in 6 minutes and 26 seconds for second place. She broke her personal best in the race. Olivia Taylor finished the 800m run in 2:47, to take third. This was the best time she’s run this race all season. She also ran a personal best in the 3200m, finishing in 13:23 for first place.
Carley Cescon ran the 800m run in 2:46 for second place and finished in sixth place in the 400m with a time of 1:11. Coach Dana Daugharthy mentioned that he is really proud of how well she has improved. The 4x800m relay team — Cescon, Lohman, Taylor and Madison Carlin — finished in third place with a time of 12:03.
Another reason why it turned out to be a good meet is that it also included the junior varsity ranks. So, all of Iola’s athletes were able to compete.
For the JV Fillies, Carlin led the way with a tie for first place in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 4 inches. It is her new personal best.
Klair Vogel finished in fifth place in the javelin, with a toss of 67’01”. Erin Klubek took fifth in the long jump, with a distance of 11’04”.
The 4×100 relay team of Carlin, Klubek, Vogel and Addie Prather finished in third with a time of 1:01. They just missed out on second place by a fraction of a second. The 4×400 team, of the same members, also took third, finishing in 5:15.
For the varsity boys, Travis Hermstein finished fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:21.
“I have been very pleased with Travis’ progression this season,” Daugharthy said. “We have seen improvements from him in every single week, and we hope to see the same thing going forward.”
The JV Mustang thinclads finished in second overall.
Chase Regehr led the way with a first place finish in the 400m dash in 55.62. This is his new personal best. Nathan Sprague set a new personal best in the 400m run as well, with a time of 58.81 and a fourth place finish.
Ethan Holloway took second in the 1600m run, with a time of 5:37. He also won second place in the high jump, leaping over 5’2”. Jonathan Rodewald finished in fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 12.78.
Brice Aiello finished in fourth place in two events. He leaped 16’05” in the long jump, and had a distance of 34’6 1/2” in the triple jump. Darius Greenawalt placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 34’7”.
The 4x100m relay team — Aiello, Greenawalt, Sprague and Rodewald — took first place with a time of 48.47 seconds. The 4x400m relay team of Aiello, Sprague, Rodewald and Regehr finished in first with a time of 3:54. The 4x800m relay team — Hermstein, Regehr, Sprague and Holloway, finished in first in 9:32.
