Iola’s Honeycutt, area players receive state basketball honors

Iola High senior Jazmyne Honeycutt, the Fillies’ leading scorer for the 2009-2010 basketball season, received state recognition for her efforts.
Honeycutt, a 5-8 forward, was named to the Wichita Eagle’s Class 4A honorable mention squad. The Eagle and The Topeka Capital Journal released their respective state all-class basketball teams Sunday.
Honeycutt poured in 242 points this year as she connected on 26 of 102 three-point field goal attempts. She was 90 pf 420 shots for the season.
Honeycutt moved to third on the career lists for three-pointers made (45) and attempted (165). She is fourth in number of made threes in a season and second on season attempts.
Honeycutt also was 36 of 62 from the free-throw line this season. She led the team with 51 steals plus had 99 rebounds, 20 assists and 20 blocked shots, which also led the team.

IN CLASS 2A, Humboldt High’s guard Tevin Strack was named to the Topeka newspaper’s All-Class 2A third team. The 6-1 senior earned 2A honorable mention for the Wichita newspaper.
Uniontown High sophomore Jacy Ermel was named to the Wichita Eagle All-Class 2A second team while UHS teammate senior Abbie Smith and Marmaton Valley High junior Maggie Meiwes earned honorable mention. Ermel and Smith received 2A honorable mention from the Capital-Journal.

IN CLASS 1A, Crest High senior guard Bryan Newton was named to the Capital-Journal All-Class 1A second team and earned honorable mention from the Eagle.
Southern Coffey County High’s senior guard Shelby Birk was selected to the Capital-Journal’s All-Class 1A third team. Lady Titan teammate Laurie Ohl, a senior, and Yates Center High senior Kassy Reynolds earned honorable mention.
Birk and fellow SCCH senior Kaitlin Meyer received 1A honorable mention from the Wichita newspaper.
