The driving distance is back for Tiger Woods, and to fellow golfing legend Tom Watson, that means victory will soon follow.
I think Tiger is back, Watson said before the Joe McGuff ALS Golf Classic at LionsGate on Monday. Hes got his length back and thats really important. When you lose your length because of soreness, you cant hit it. That weighs on your mind.
Woods finished tied for 11th in the Players Championship, shooting rounds of 72-71-65-69 in the event won by Webb Simpson. The 14-time major winner started the week ranked No. 92 in the world and moved to No. 80 with a performance that included a 354-yard drive on the par-4 No. 14 hole on Sunday.
Im not that far off from winning golf tournaments, Woods said after Sundays round. Theres no way I would have predicted I would be at this point the beginning of the year, the way I was just coming back and just trying to get a feel for it and then hopefully have a schedule.
Woods, who hasnt won a major since 2008, underwent four procedures on his back from 2014 to 2017 and has been looking to regain his dominant form.
Watson said the game of golf benefits when Woods is relevant.
Hes going to win again, I believe, Watson said. Hes great for the game.
