Lady Cubs and Fillies open season

The Iola and Humboldt volleyball teams opened their seasons at the Wellsville tournament Saturday morning.
The Fillies went 1-3 and finished seventh while the Lady Cubs split down the middle at 2-2, finishing fifth. The Lady Cubs opened things up with a sweep at the hands of 4A Baldwin (25-19, 25-13).
Madison Gean and Camrie Farran had two kills each in the match while Emma Johnson put up five aces.  
The Lady Cubs and the Fillies hooked up next and Humboldt walked away with a three-set win (25-19, 18-25, 25-17).
Aricah McCall bounced back with eight kills throughout the match followed by seven for Farran.
Johnson had three aces and Gean put up four blocks.
For the Fillies, Piper Moore had 10 kills, Mia Aronson had 10 assists. Hannah Gardner recorded eight digs while Becca Sprague and Shaylee Sutterby went 10-11 and 15-16 on their serves respectively. Ellie Carson also had a 43 percent kill rate.
The Fillies then took on Pioneer League foe, Burlington. After a 25-24 set one win, Iola fell 25-12 and 25-14 in the final two sets to lose the match.
Moore had six kills and five digs and Sprague had nine digs and a block. Paige Burrough went 7-8 on attacks with half of them being kills and Mia Aronson went 13-14 on serves with one ace.
Iola wrapped up pool play with a 1-2 loss to Baldwin (25-15, 22-15, 25-14).
Lauryn Holloway had five blocks and Burrough had six kills. Moore had four aces and Aronson had 10 assists. Sprague had 12 digs and Carson went 9-10 on attacks.
Humboldt closed out pool play with a 1-2 loss to Burlington (23-25, 25-9, 25-19).
McCall had seven kills and fellow senior Kaylie Johnson had six. McCall also had two aces and two blocks while Alayna Johnson put up 22 assists. Emma Johnson had eight digs.
Humboldt ended the day with a sweep over Waverly (25-22, 25-22).
McCall, Farran and Gean each had four kills to go along with two aces for Gean and McCall. Gean also had two blocks and Emma Johnson put up six digs.
The Fillies also ended things on a high note with a sweep (25-20, 25-17) over Prairie View.
Aronson had six aces after going 15-16 on serves. Sprague had five aces and was a perfect 14-14 on serves. Moore had four kills, Hannah Gardner had five digs and Holloway had a block.
The Lady Cubs will host St. Mary’s Colgan and Jayhawk-Linn on Tuesday while the Fillies will have the week off to retune before their home invitational on Sept. 8.
