HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Cubs hosted a 10-team volleyball tournament on Saturday, featuring many of the area’s top teams and players.
In addition to the Cubs, Marmaton Valley, Crest and Yates Center all attended the event and finished the day with varying levels of success.
The hosts found themselves in a pool with Yates Center, Crest, Waverly and Marais des Cygnes Valley and rolled through their competition.
“I am very pleased with our play today,” Humboldt coach Terry Meadows said. “I thought everyone played to their potential and battled for every point.  We were finally able to play our game and not worry who was on the other side of the net, and that was big.”
They won all their pool-play games in straight sets and advanced as a top seed into the championship bracket.
Against Waverly — who ended up second in the pool — Aricah McCall came up huge for the Cubs with nine kills. Sydney Houk added five kills in that match.
McCall added eight more kills to her resume against MdCV.
Once in the top bracket, the Cubs rolled past Pittsburg-Colgan to set up a finals match-up with Olathe Metro. Olathe Metro was able top Humboldt, 25-17, 25-22, to win the tournament.
Annalise Whitcomb led the Cubs over Colgan with an incredibly well-rounded effort. She was the team’s leader in kills, assists, digs and aces with five kills, 14 assists, six digs, and four aces.
Crest finished its day at 1-3 with a win over Yates Center, but fell to Humboldt, MdCV and Waverly.
Yates Center finished with a 0-4 record but had several hard-fought matches including a first set win against MdCV in its final match of the tournament, 25-22, but they lost the second and third sets.
Marmaton Valley drew a tough bracket with Pittsburg-Colgan and Olathe Metro to go against and they lost against both of the bigger schools, but they were able to beat Altoona Midway and Pleasanton to finish the tournament at 2-2.
