Personal Service Insurance has moved into its new location at 103 E. Madison.
The office space was a blur of activity Monday morning, as internet and phone lines were connected, desks and equipment assembled, and file cabinets situated. Even Culligan Water was on site.
The insurance company moved from its former location at 211 South St. Their phone number and office hours will remain the same.
Personal Service Insurance (PSI) was established in 1928 by C.A. Houk and known as Houk Insurance for 67 years.
Loren and Janet Korte purchased the agency in 1986, opened an Iola office in 1989, and changed its name to PSI in 1995.
Loren died in July 2025. Longtime employee Rosan Williams has since taken the helm and oversees the business’s three locations in Iola, Humboldt and Moran.
PSI’s new home is formerly Clyde Toland’s law office. Toland, who owns the building, will continue using a rear office space for his work as a full-time author.
Toland moved with wife Nancy to Lawrence in 2024 and retired from the legal profession in 2023 after 48 years of practice. He began in 1975 in the very same office building with Toland and Thompson, which consisted of his father, Stanley, uncle Frank Thompson, and brother John Toland. The firm dissolved in 2006, when John died. Afterwards, Clyde continued on his own as the Law Office of Clyde Toland, LLC.
The building was significantly renovated in the 1950s by Security Savings and Loan, which converted the building from a two-story building into a single-story structure with two separate office spaces. Dr. A.R. Chambers used the offices in the building’s south end for many years.
Security Savings and Loan later built a new building at 120 E. Madison Ave., moving there in 1975. That building is now Community National Bank & Trust’s Iola banking center.
