Iola High senior Marcus Sullivan and freshman Mike Armstrong were selected as first-team All-Southeast Kansas League wrestlers. Mustang sophomore Stephen McDonald was awarded SEK honorable mention.
The SEK wrestling coaches made the 2010-2011 All-SEK selections Monday.
Sullivan went 6-0 in SEK matches this season, missing the first two duals with Pittsburg and Fort Scott because of illness. The senior garnered league honors for the second year in a row at 160 pounds as he was honorable mention as a junior.
Sullivan, who has been wrestling just three years, finished up his senior season with a Kansas Class 4A Regional tournament championship at 160 and a second trip to the Class 4A state tournament. He went 1-2 at the state tournament ending up 29-4 on the season.
Armstrong claimed the All-SEK first-team spot at 119 pounds going 7-1 in league action. His only loss came on the final day of league matches, losing in overtime to Andrew Fix of Parsons.
Armstrong claimed fourth place at the Class 4A regional tournament, qualifying for the state tournament. He was 0-2 in his first state tournament and finished 24-19 for the season.
McDonald was Iola High’s first wrestler to go undefeated in SEK action. McDonald faced a wrestler from each of the league schools in 189 pound, winning five by pins and three by decisions.
McDonald earned honorable mention in SEK at 189. According to IHS wrestling coach Ron Schomaker, Chanute High junior Jared McComb, who did not wrestle two league schools — Iola and Labette County — was named first team because of tiebreaker criteria. McComb placed fifth at the 4A state tournament.
McDonald finished his season at his first state tournament also. He placed fourth in the regional meet and went 0-2 at the state tournament. McDonald ended up with a 32-16 record.
